Grammy-nominated Afrobeat star Femi Kuti has affirmed that the music catalogue of his legendary father, Fela Kuti, remains firmly under family ownership.
Speaking during an appearance on Entertainment Tonight, Femi clarified that while the family enters into temporary licensing agreements, they have never relinquished full rights to the iconic catalogue.
“We never sold it. It’s under Fela’s estate, which is controlled by the family. We license the music, so we still maintain control,” he explained.

According to Femi, the decision to retain ownership was largely influenced by his elder sister, whom he described as the principal guardian of Fela’s legacy. He noted that she strongly opposed any move to sell the catalogue, insisting on preserving both its cultural and financial value.

“My elder sister was very against us selling it. She’s like the main caretaker,” he said.
Femi emphasized that the family’s unified stance ensures not only long-term benefits but also protects the dignity and authenticity of Fela’s work. He added that maintaining ownership allows future generations of the Kuti family to continue managing and honoring the Afrobeat pioneer’s enduring legacy.
