Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State yesterday ordered the state Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba, to launch investigation into the alleged rape of a mother of three.
Fayemi ordered the investigation, following social media information, which had gone viral. The information claimed that a woman, who took up bricklaying job, to be able to feed her children and ‘drunk’ husband, was raped by her male colleagues as a means of punishment because she refused to go on errands for them.
The social media information reads: “At 7a.m., this happened in Ilejemeje, Ekiti, woman takes up bricklaying job so she can feed her kids, husband is a drunk. Her fellow male bricklayers began sending her on errands to buy food. She refused yesterday and they decided to punish her today by raping her.”
The governor gave the directive yesterday during an inauguration of members of committee set up by the state government to fight Gender Violence and protect the Child Rights Act. Fayemi bemoaned the alarming rate of gender violence. While giving the directive, Fayemi said that he was sure that the police would carry out thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to book.
The governor noted that gender-based violence had become pandemic in the country, to the extent that one out of every five women must have been raped or abused.
He said: “We must all work together to fight this. We just learnt that a woman was violently molested at Iludun-Ekiti in Ilejemeje Local Government Area. I have asked the police to investigate whoever was responsible and bring the culprit to book.”
