Family Dispute Halts Burial Plans for Gospel Singer Omije Ojumi

Burial plans for popular gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known by her stage name Omije Ojumi, have been suspended following unresolved issues within her family.
The development was confirmed by Lanre Alewilese, a colleague of the late singer and a member of the burial planning committee, in a post shared on Instagram.
Alewilese announced that all previously scheduled burial arrangements had been put on hold, stressing that the decision was not taken lightly.
“This is to inform you that all plans and arrangements for the burial of our late sister and colleague, Lady Evangelist Bunmi Akinnaanu a.k.a. Omije Ojumi, by the Burial Planning Committee have been totally cancelled,” he wrote.
According to him, the suspension became necessary due to issues arising from within the singer’s family, adding that the committee regretted any inconvenience the decision may cause to well-wishers and the public.
He clarified that the move was a collective decision of both the family and the burial committee, noting that he was only asked to formally inform Nigerians of the change.
As a result, previously announced events — including the service of songs, candlelight procession and tribute night scheduled for January 20, as well as the private interment planned for January 21 — have all been placed on hold.
“The Tuesday and Wednesday programmes earlier fixed at the LTV 8 venue are now on hold. The family will update Nigerians after they have come to a conclusion,” Alewilese stated.
Omije Ojumi passed away on January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital after battling a prolonged illness. She was widely celebrated for her inspirational music, particularly her hit song Omije Ojumi, and was known for leaving a successful banking career to pursue gospel music full-time.
The family is expected to announce new burial arrangements once internal issues are resolved.
