Ex-NAN sports writer dies at 60

The Nigeria Football Supporters Club has expressed shock at the death of its member and veteran sports journalist, Mr Ewedapo Akintunde, which occurred on Saturday.
Akintunde, who retired from the News Agency of Nigeria in 2016 as an Assistant Editor-in-Chief, died in his residence in Itoki, Ogun, during an illness.
He was aged 60 and survived by a wife and three children.
The NFSC Chairman, Samuel Ikpea, told NAN in Lagos that Akintunde’s death was a huge loss to the club, sports writers and the entire Nigerian journalism industry.
“One of our members called an hour ago and said that Baba Ewe, as we call him, is dead.
“I doubted him at first. As I speak to you now, I am still in shock; so are other members of this great club.
“It is indeed very painful because he just retired from service last year,” the chairman said.
Ikpea described the deceased as a vibrant member of the club, who remained steadfast for over 20 years.
He said that Akintunde’s commitment to the club was worthy of emulation.
He noted that Akintunde was part of Nigeria’s contingent to various international football tournaments.
“He was always there especially in media coverage in which NAN stands out.
“His death is a painful and irreparable loss to the NFSC.
“We express our condolences to his family and NAN.
“We pray for his soul to rest in peace,” the chairman said.
NAN reports that Akintunde worked for years on NAN sports desk.
He later headed the entertainment and lifestyle desk until his retirement.
