The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has praised Morocco’s leadership of the humanitarian response to the devastating earthquake that hit the country on Sept.08.
The Agency Administrator Samantha Power has voiced her country’s commitment to support the Government of Morocco’s recovery efforts, as the North African Kingdom’s works to provide immediate, life-saving humanitarian assistance to those in need.
Based on preliminary assessments, the United States, through USAID, will provide Morocco up to $1 million in initial humanitarian assistance to support people in the areas most affected by the earthquake and its aftershocks, said Mrs. Samantha in a press release.
This funding will help organizations on the ground provide emergency food assistance, health services, shelter, and mental health and psychosocial resources to assist the Moroccan-led response. The United States is also sharing specialized technical expertise directly with the Moroccan government to bolster its ongoing emergency response.
“In the wake of the earthquake and its aftershocks, we have seen tremendous bravery and compassion from people doing everything they can to offer help. Neighbors have come together to rush food and water to families who have lost their homes. First responders have spent hours searching for those trapped. Citizens have stood in long lines to donate blood”, said the USAID Chief.
She also hailed the outpouring of generosity and compassion from individuals seeking to help the people of Morocco during these difficult times.
