Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has donated N300,000 to 15 teachers who were present when he paid an unscheduled visit to Community Primary School, Amazu, in Ishielu Local Government Area of the state.
The governor also suspended the headmaster of the school and seven teachers who were absent from the school during official hours.
Umahi announced the suspension on Friday when he paid an unscheduled visit to the school.
The governor had expressed displeasure about the way the teachers were dressed, saying the N300,000 he donated to them was to enable them change their wardrobes.
Umahi, who engaged the teachers in academic exercise, including questions in English language and Mathematics, expressed dissatisfaction with the mode of dressing of the teachers.
He further directed the suspended teachers to report to the chairman of Ishielu LGA, Mr. Henry Eze, who would channel their matter to the Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Board for appropriate disciplinary action.
The governor expressed dismay over the nonchalant attitude of civil servants in the state and warned that the government would no longer tolerate irresponsible workers.
“It is very unfortunate the way and manner some of our civil servants do their job without passion.
“We have defined the contours and perimeters of our call for change in our attitude and perception to what we refer to as government property, it is absurd that pupils will be in the school and the headmaster and teachers will brazenly absent themselves from their duties,” he lamented.
He urged the teachers present during his visit to improve their efforts in imparting knowledge to their pupils.
