The Not Addressing This Anymore (NATA) documentary, directed by filmmaker Huzzain Bello, has sparked conversations on infertility in Nigeria following its screening at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The AMVCA 2026-nominated documentary was screened at the Afe Babalola Auditorium of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, where students, lecturers, healthcare professionals and policymakers discussed misconceptions surrounding infertility and reproductive health.
The event was organised to sustain fertility awareness beyond the annual Fertility Awareness Month observed globally in June, with participants encouraged to view infertility as a medical condition rather than a source of stigma.
Speaking at the event, Bello said the documentary was created to promote empathy and informed conversations, stressing that infertility affects both men and women.
He noted that while medical experts have identified male-factor infertility, including low sperm count and azoospermia, as a significant contributor to conception challenges, women continue to bear most of the blame due to prevailing cultural beliefs.
The screening received support from the Director-General of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr Shaibu Husseini, who also lectures at UNILAG.
The Pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Prof. Sunday Oloruntola, also directed students to write reviews of the documentary as part of their Continuous Assessment.
The programme featured an interactive session led by fertility counsellor Mrs Umo Akinselure, who discussed reproductive health, fertility challenges and the emotional impact of infertility on affected individuals and couples.
The documentary was supported by The Bridge Clinic and Deen Consult Services, with the latter serving as co-producer.
Following its UNILAG debut, NATA is scheduled for screenings at Crescent University, Abeokuta, Babcock University and Nile University, Abuja, during the October academic session, while discussions are ongoing with other tertiary institutions.
Since its release, the documentary has been selected for the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) 2025, won the Social Impact Award at the Activists Without Borders Film Festival (AWBFF) 2025 and earned a nomination for Best Documentary at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
The production team is also developing NATA into a feature-length documentary to expand conversations on infertility across homes, healthcare institutions and policy circles in Nigeria.
