Mr. Oladipupo Adebutu, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development has bemoaned the poverty level amongst Nigerians, describing the situation as worrisome.
Besides, the lawmaker, who is representing Reno Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, said one of the panacea to solving what he termed ” a national wmbarrassment ” lies in the embrace of Agriculture.
Addressing “the true face of Ogun Central”, an assemblage of opinion moulders in Egbaland, on Sunday, in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, the lawmaker, who is aspiring to become the Governor of the state come 2019, added that government should facilitate improved spending in infrastructure.
“One of the ways by which we can drastically reduce the national embarrassment which begging and the menace of area boy syndrome has brought upon our nation is to invest massively in Agriculture and the value-chain
“It is also germane for government to consider private sector participation in the upgrade of infrastructure and other business architecture; the idea of putting billions of naira, which could be freed for social service provision, into building roads is unacceptable to rational minds,” Adebutu added while faulting the model of road construction in the State.
The lawmaker, who is eyeing the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to becoming Governor, listed multiple taxation as one of the killers of Small and Medium scale businesses, just as he asked government agencies to harmonise their levies to inflate the economy.
Responding to a question on the lack of patronage of local contractors and suppliers by the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration in the state, Adebutu said he would respect the provisions of the local content acts being championed by the National Assembly.
Answering question suggesting that Ogun East and indeed the Adebutu family should support Ogun West and particularly Gboyega Nasir Isiaka for the 2019 governorship, the farmer lawmaker said the latter had wasted their golden opportunities in 2011 and 2015.
“We wanted to pay back Ogun West senatorial district in 2011 by supporting and collaborating with them to produce the governor, but what do we have, General Olurin came out surprisingly and the people of the area split their votes.
“Again, in 2015, nobody rigged GNI out as being speculated in some quarters, the fact is that the Ogun West people voted APC instead of their son as evidenced in the outcome of rhe result. In Imeko Afon local government where GNI hails from, he only won by one thousand votes.
“The votes that earn me this seat as a lawmaker is twenty-six thousand higher than my closest runner up. So, I cannot wait at 56 having waited eight years. Additional eight years will make me 64 which is unacceptable to me and the Ogun East people,” the lawmaker said.
He concluded that bottom-top approach to the social contract is the order of the day in developed democracies, just as he urged his guests to tinker with manifesto proposal for consideration and adoption when next they meet.
