AATREN Sounds Alarm on Fake‘Obas’ and Misrepresentation of African Traditional Religion in Lagos

LAGOS — The Association for African Traditional Religion Practitioners, Nigeria and Overseas (AATREN), led by Chief Ifasegun Elegushi, has raised alarm over a rising number of individuals falsely claiming traditional authority and misrepresenting African Traditional Religion in Lagos State.

Speaking during the association’s monthly meeting, Chief Elegushi criticized groups adopting the revered title of “Oba” and appearing in royal regalia without lawful recognition from traditional or government authorities. He warned that such actions threaten the dignity, authority, and public respect for recognized monarchs, creating confusion in local communities.

AATREN also condemned individuals posing as practitioners of African Traditional Religion in public spaces and markets, soliciting money in ways contrary to the ethical and sacred values of Isese practice.

The meeting brought together members from different branches and communities to deliberate on preserving the integrity and true image of African Traditional Religion. Chief Elegushi called on both government authorities and the public to collaborate with AATREN in stopping these misleading practices that tarnish the religion’s reputation.

First Vice President of AATREN, Chief Mrs. Folusho Adeogun-Oga, urged practitioners to remain united and uphold the religion’s core virtues of peace, love, and tolerance. “Isese is built on harmony and genuine love for one another. We must continue to coexist peacefully and support our communities,” she emphasized.

Responding on behalf of members, Chief Garuba praised the association’s leadership and called for practitioners to protect the religion’s image through exemplary conduct. He stressed that the future recognition of African Traditional Religion hinges on the actions and integrity of its followers.

AATREN’s leadership reiterated that unity, discipline, cultural preservation, and peace remain essential for ensuring African Traditional Religion continues to command respect and inspire communities across Nigeria.
