A brewing disagreement between Nigerian music stars Davido and Wande Coal over an unreleased collaboration has sparked a heated debate among music fans on social media.
The controversy centres on a song recorded by the two artistes that was never officially released in the manner initially planned.
Davido recently explained that Wande Coal had approached him to contribute a verse to the song. According to Davido, Wande intended to release the original version first before later putting out a remix featuring him.
Davido said he was uncomfortable with the arrangement because he did not record his contribution with the understanding that it would be used for a remix.
The disagreement reportedly contributed to the song not being officially released.
However, Wande Coal has presented a different account of the situation, maintaining that the song already had a release plan before Davido’s contribution was added.
Responding to the issue, Wande questioned Davido’s attempt to influence the release strategy of a song he regarded as his own.
“Song wey been get release plan and date! Song wey no be your own you wan dictate release plan. That song fuckin’ did well without you on it, bruv!” he wrote.
Wande’s comment further fuelled the controversy, with fans taking different positions on whether the original artiste or a featured artiste should have the final say on the song’s release.
One social media user, Daniel Regha, argued that Davido had no right to dictate the rollout of the song because he was a featured artiste.
Regha maintained that Wande’s decision to release the original version before putting out a remix featuring Davido was a reasonable strategy.
Another user, mama_maso, offered a more balanced perspective, arguing that being a featured artiste does not automatically remove one’s right to have an opinion on how a collaboration involving them is released.
The user, however, noted that neither artiste necessarily had absolute control over the rollout and suggested that the disagreement could have been resolved privately.
Another fan also cautioned against drawing conclusions without knowing the specific agreement reached between both artistes and their respective teams.
The debate has consequently shifted beyond the unreleased song to broader questions about collaboration etiquette in the Nigerian music industry.
Issues such as ownership, credits, release dates, promotional plans and whether a new version should be treated as a remix or the original collaboration can all become points of disagreement when artistes work together.
