Traditional chiefs and princes in Ipetumodu, Ife North Local Government Area, have welcomed a peaceful atmosphere in the ancient town following the dethronement of their embattled Oba, Joseph Oloyede, convicted in the United States for tax fraud and money laundering.
The community also commended the efforts of Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, Hon. Akinyode Oyewusi, for promoting unity and sustaining peace during the turbulence surrounding the deposed monarch.
At the palace of the Apetu of Ipetumodu, Chief Abraham Oyetunde, the Mosaala of Ipetumodu, lauded Governor Ademola Adeleke for addressing the town’s concerns. “Since the dethronement, the town has been peaceful. We, the chiefs, actively participate in resolving local issues. The government’s handling of the matter was mature, and I assure our people there will be no violence in Ipetumodu,” he said.
Chief Lawrence Odewale, the Aresa of Ipetumodu, acknowledged that the dethronement received mixed reactions. “We are relieved by the removal of the Apetu, as we have awaited this since our king was jailed. While we have been managing community affairs, the responsibilities of a king cannot be shouldered by sixteen chiefs alone,” he added.
Prince Olaboye Ayoola of the Aribile ruling house praised Oyewusi for mediating between the community and government officials. “The Deputy Speaker ensured dialogue between stakeholders, the Chief of Staff, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters. His intervention facilitated infrastructural development, including roads and an 80-bed general hospital,” Ayoola noted.
The community’s response underscores a newfound stability in Ipetumodu, signaling a hopeful chapter for the town following a period of uncertainty.
