Bola Ahmed Tinubu Warns APC Against ‘Do-or-Die’ Politics Ahead of 2027 Primaries.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against engaging in infighting and “do-or-die” politics as the ruling party commences its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement personally signed on Thursday, the President appealed to aspirants, delegates and party leaders to conduct themselves peacefully while upholding the principles of fairness, internal democracy and sportsmanship throughout the exercise.

Tinubu described the primaries — beginning with House of Representatives contests and ending with the presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026 — as crucial to the unity, stability and future of the APC.

According to him, the era of bitter and destructive politics must be left behind.

“We should not play the politics of old; the do-or-die politics that we have put behind us. Politics should never be a zero-sum game,” the President stated.

He urged party members to approach the contests with maturity and unity, stressing that political competition should not breed hostility among loyal party members.

“Election is an essential ingredient of democracy. Where consensus fails, I urge us all to go into the primaries as brothers and sisters,” he said.

Tinubu further called on all participants in the primaries, whether contestants or voters, to maintain peace and act in the overall interest of both the APC and the country.

The President advised victorious aspirants against arrogance, while encouraging those who lose to accept the outcome in good faith and remain committed to the party.

“In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser. I urge the winners not to gloat in victory and the losers to show sportsmanship by taking things in their stride and preparing for another time,” he added.

Tinubu also endorsed consensus arrangements where necessary, noting that such measures could help reduce tension and division within the ruling party.

“I am aware that, in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and our party constitution, leaders at various levels have initiated conversations to produce consensus candidates. It is a commendable option that would help reduce rancour and bad blood among party members,” he noted.

The President equally charged governors, party executives and stakeholders to provide all aspirants with a level playing field during the primaries.

“To the party leadership, our governors and other leaders, I urge you to be fair and just. You must rise above sentiment to offer all aspirants a level playing field,” he said.

Tinubu also appealed for greater participation of women and youths in the APC political process, describing their inclusion as critical to the future of the party.

“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart. I appeal to voters in the primaries and leaders at all levels to give special consideration to our women and youth in the contest,” he stated.

He further warned security agencies, particularly the Police, against interfering in the party’s internal affairs beyond maintaining law and order.

“Your duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more,” the President warned.

Despite the concerns, Tinubu expressed confidence that the APC would emerge stronger and more united after the completion of the primaries.
