Labour Party Eyes 2027 Comeback After Peter Obi’s Departure

The Labour Party (LP) is regrouping after the departure of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, which party officials say left a significant gap.

Ken Asogwa, the party’s Public Secretary, described Obi as a “colossus” during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

“We can’t close our eyes to the fact that we lost Peter Obi; he was a colossus within the party. His departure left a void, but the party had anticipated it,” Asogwa said. Obi officially left the Labour Party on 31 December 2025, joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and last month moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal crises.

Despite his absence, Asogwa assured that the Labour Party is rebuilding its structures and ranks, leveraging institutional members like the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

“The former leadership annihilated these structures, but we brought them back, and today we are stronger together,” he added.

While many observers believe replacing Obi, who garnered over six million votes in the 2023 election, will be difficult, Asogwa remains confident.

“The Labour Party that produced the former presidential candidate has even better capacity today to field someone of equal stature for 2027,” he said.
