Oby Kechere, ‘Aki na Ukwa’ Star and Nollywood Director, Dies After Prolonged Illness

Veteran Nigerian actress and film director, Oby Kechere, widely remembered for her role as Ms Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, has passed away.

Her death was confirmed on Saturday by the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, Uche Agbo. According to the statement, Kechere died on April 27, 2026, following a prolonged illness.

In an official announcement, the guild expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the late actress—who served as Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter—as a committed professional and a key contributor to the growth of the organization.

“Her dedication and impact on the unity and development of the guild, particularly within the Abuja Chapter, will remain indelible,” the statement noted, while extending condolences to her family, colleagues, and loved ones.

Kechere, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, began her Nollywood journey in 2001, gaining early recognition through appearances in popular August Meeting films. She hailed from Mbaise in Imo State and remained an influential figure in Nigeria’s film industry throughout her career.
