In a remarkable story of resilience and determination, Offiong Edet, the overall best graduating student at the University of Calabar’s 38th convocation, has revealed that he lived without personal accommodation for over a year during his studies.
Edet, who graduated from the Department of Business Education, disclosed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he spent 13 months without a place of his own, often sleeping in classrooms or relying on friends for temporary shelter.
According to him, financial hardship rooted in his background made it impossible to afford accommodation. Despite these challenges, he remained unwavering in his academic pursuit.

“I had no money to secure personal accommodation because of my poor background,” he said. “But I stayed committed to my studies—attending classes, completing assignments, and taking tests diligently.”
Edet attributed his academic success to strong determination and focus, emphasizing that discipline played a critical role in overcoming his circumstances.

He noted that students who remain dedicated and humble in their approach to learning are less likely to face academic difficulties.
“I approached my academics with a deep sense of discipline. I saw learning as my master and myself as a servant,” he added.
His inspiring journey stands as a testament to the power of perseverance in the face of adversity, offering hope to students navigating similar challenges.
