Renowned traditional chief and medical expert, Sonny Folorunso Kuku, has hailed former Ogun State governor and senator, Gbenga Daniel, as a “born leader” whose life reflects excellence across multiple spheres.
In a tribute marking Daniel’s 70th birthday, Kuku praised his enduring commitment to discipline, mentorship, and public service, attributing his rise to the influence of notable figures such as Obafemi Awolowo and business mogul Subomi Balogun.
He traced Daniel’s career from engineering, where he earned recognition as a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, to his active role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement alongside President Bola Tinubu under the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

Kuku noted that this foundation shaped Daniel’s political journey, culminating in his two-term tenure as governor of Ogun State and his current position as a senator in the National Assembly.
In a personal reflection, Kuku revealed how Daniel played a pivotal role in restoring his standing within the royal court of Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

He recounted that after falling out of favour with the monarch due to alleged misinformation, Daniel intervened in 2007 during his conferment as Otunba Obalofin, appealing directly to the Awujale for reconciliation.
The intervention, Kuku said, led to his reinstatement and ultimately paved the way for his emergence as the Ogbéni Oja of Ijebu.
“Without that intervention, I might not be Ogbéni Oja today,” he stated.
Describing Daniel as deeply religious, generous, and charismatic, Kuku emphasised his far-reaching impact on individuals and communities, as well as his enduring legacy as a leader worthy of emulation.
He concluded by offering prayers for continued strength and influence, noting that Daniel’s life story stands as a powerful example of leadership, loyalty, and purposeful living.
