Okpebholo Slams Attack on ADC Members, Vows to Keep Edo Peaceful

Monday Okpebholo has strongly condemned the assault on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the incident as a troubling escalation of internal party conflict.

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the Edo State Governor expressed sympathy for the affected ADC members, lamenting what he called the exploitation of the state’s peaceful atmosphere to foment unrest.

“As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity,” the statement read.

Okpebholo, who serves as the state’s Chief Security Officer, pledged firm action to ensure Edo does not descend into political chaos.

While the exact motive behind the attack remains uncertain, the governor suggested it may have been orchestrated to tarnish Edo’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states.

“I strongly believe its primary aim is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation,” he stated.

He further stressed that no form of political blackmail would erode the confidence and support Edo residents have for their government.

According to him, governance should center on performance, public engagement, and sustained trust-building.

Warning Against Political Violence
The governor denounced the use of violence for political advantage, describing it as a sign of desperation and disregard for democratic values.

He maintained that his administration welcomes constructive opposition but will not be intimidated by what he termed blackmail or staged provocations.

While sympathising with ADC members, Okpebholo advised the party to carefully assess the situation and avoid external accusations, noting that the conflict appeared to stem from internal disagreements.

Calling on residents to remain calm, the governor reassured citizens that the incident would not define Edo’s identity.
“Edo remains a peaceful state, and that legacy must be preserved,” he affirmed.

He also cautioned opposition parties to resolve internal disputes before organising public gatherings, warning that any attempt to incite violence under political cover would be decisively addressed.

Okpebholo urged the police and other security agencies to intensify surveillance of political activities to prevent further escalation, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Edo State.
