Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Christian Leaders Set for 2026 CAN Divine Service in Lagos

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is set to headline the 2026 Inter-Denominational Divine Service organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State Chapter.

The event, themed “Immanuel: God with Us,” will hold on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Olorunda, Ketu, Lagos. The theme is drawn from Matthew 1:23 and focuses on the assurance of divine presence amid social and economic uncertainties.

Also expected at the gathering are the Pioneer Chairman of ECWA Lagos Central District Church Council, Rev. Dr. Ezekiel Babatunde Omidina, and other prominent Christian leaders across denominational lines.

Church Calls for Patience Amid Economic Strain
Addressing journalists at a press briefing, Lagos CAN Chairman, Stephen Adegbite, acknowledged prevailing national challenges, including economic pressures, inflation, and ongoing structural reforms affecting many Nigerians.

He noted that policy measures introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are aimed at stabilising the economy, strengthening institutions, and positioning the country for sustainable growth.

“There are emerging indicators that some of these interventions are beginning to yield results,” Adegbite said, urging Christians to exercise patience, engage constructively in civic matters, and sustain prayers for national leaders.

A Call for Unity and Intercession
Describing the service as a spiritual convocation that transcends denominational boundaries, Adegbite said the gathering would bring together Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal, Evangelical, and African Instituted Churches in collective intercession for Lagos State and Nigeria.

According to him, the declaration “Immanuel” represents both a promise and an affirmation that God remains present with His people amid governance challenges, economic strain, and personal uncertainties.

“We shall pray for Lagos State, for Mr. Governor and his team, for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government, and for all institutions responsible for the well-being of our people,” he stated, adding that citizens would be encouraged to embrace peace, righteousness, unity, and responsible citizenship.

New CAN Secretariat to Be Unveiled
As part of the State of the Church address, the CAN chairman announced the completion of a new Lagos State Secretariat located at Otunba Jobi-Fela Way, beside Regency Hall, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja. The facility will be officially opened on Saturday morning ahead of the divine service.

Adegbite described the project as a fulfilled promise under his leadership, calling it a symbol of unity, accountability, administrative strength, and renewed vision for the Christian community in Lagos.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Kadir Hamzat; Chief of Staff Mr. Tayo Ayinde; Secretary to the State Government Barr. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Special Adviser on Christian Religious Matters Very Rev. Bukola Adeleke; Iya Aladura General Her Grace Dr. Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye; and Superior Apostolic Mother Bose Osinowo for their support in delivering the project.

Adegbite concluded by calling on Christians and residents of goodwill across Lagos to participate in large numbers, describing the service as a moment of thanksgiving, intercession, and renewed hope for the state and the nation.
