Wema Bank digital innovation award at Euromoney 2025 affirms ALAT’s fintech leadership and Nigeria’s rising profile in global digital banking

Wema Bank digital innovation award has been conferred on ALAT, the bank’s flagship digital platform, as it clinched the title of Nigeria’s Best Digital Bank at the 2025 Euromoney Awards held in London.

The recognition affirms Wema Bank’s pioneering role in transforming African banking through digital innovation.

In a statement following the award ceremony at The Peninsula Hotel in London, Wema Bank was applauded for its revolutionary digital services and sustained commitment to bridging financial gaps in Nigeria.

The Euromoney Awards, considered the pinnacle of global banking excellence, honour institutions that have demonstrated outstanding performance and innovation.

Established in 1945, Wema Bank is Nigeria’s oldest indigenous bank. In 2017, it made history with the launch of ALAT, Africa’s first fully digital bank.

Since then, ALAT has evolved into an all-encompassing platform offering seamless access to financial and lifestyle solutions for individuals and businesses.

From fund transfers and airtime top-ups to loans, savings, international flight bookings, movie tickets, stock trading, health consultations and customised financial services, ALAT is designed to meet the daily needs of Nigerians at home and abroad.

The bank’s digital ecosystem has empowered users across age groups and professions, with a growing suite of features that blur the line between banking and lifestyle.

Wema Bank Managing Director and CEO, Moruf Oseni, received the award in London and expressed gratitude for the recognition.

“The world is moving fast and so is the permeation of ‘digital’ into the most critical aspects of our lives,” Oseni said.

“Eighty years ago, typewriters were the extent of banking technology. Today, we have pioneered a fully digital bank and possess technology advanced enough to power over 150 FinTechs.”

He added: “Wema Bank will never relent in empowering lives through innovation. We will continue to pioneer digital transformation, empower innovators and leverage technology to make a meaningful impact across Africa and beyond.”

According to Oseni, the Wema Bank digital innovation award is not only a celebration of past achievements but also a challenge to sustain the bank’s leadership in digital financial services.

ALAT has served over one million individuals and businesses, creating access to reliable financial services while enabling convenience and inclusion.

Its commitment to sustainability and digital empowerment has seen Wema Bank introduce a number of industry firsts including ALAT For Business, CoopHub for cooperatives, ALAT Xplore for teenagers, and ALATPay, a comprehensive digital payment gateway.

The Euromoney accolade comes at a symbolic moment for the bank, which celebrated its 80th anniversary on May 2nd, 2025, alongside the 8th anniversary of ALAT.

These milestones reflect not only longevity but also the bank’s adaptability in a fast-evolving financial landscape.

“Any institution that will remain relevant by the end of the next decade must leverage digital today,” Oseni noted. “We are proud that Wema Bank is leading this charge in Africa.”

As Wema Bank continues to redefine banking standards and push the boundaries of innovation, global recognition such as the Wema Bank digital innovation award reinforces Nigeria’s rising profile as a leader in fintech and digital banking.
