AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina signals his readiness for national service, hinting at a potential run for Nigeria’s presidency after his tenure
The outgoing President of the **African Development Bank (AfDB)**, **Akinwumi Adesina**, has hinted at the possibility of running for **Nigeria’s presidency** after completing his tenure at the continental financial institution.
In an interview with **Arise Television’s** Rufai Oseni, Adesina affirmed his **commitment to national service**, stating that he is open to serving in any capacity globally, across Africa, and specifically in Nigeria.
Adesina, a former **Minister of Agriculture** under **Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan**, first assumed leadership of the **AfDB in 2015** and secured re-election for a second term in **2020**. The bank, established in **1964**, plays a critical role in financing development projects across Africa.
During the interview, Adesina reflected on his deep **patriotism and identity as a Nigerian**, sharing how he once turned down the opportunity to obtain **US citizenship** despite the challenges associated with holding a Nigerian passport.
“God did not make a mistake in making me a Nigerian. He didn’t make a mistake in making me an African. I will live as a Nigerian, and I will walk by the special grace of God. That green passport will be respected just like everybody else in the world,” he said.
When asked directly whether he would contest for Nigeria’s **presidency**, Adesina did not provide a definitive answer but reiterated his **willingness to serve**. He even referenced popular Nigerian artist **Davido**, playfully modifying lyrics from the hit song *Unavailable*:
“I would ask Davido to change that song—‘I am available, they will see me.’”
While he stopped short of announcing a **presidential bid**, his statements fuel speculation about his potential **participation in Nigeria’s 2027 elections**.
Adesina, widely respected for his **economic expertise and leadership**, remains a key figure in African development and could emerge as a formidable contender should he choose to enter the political arena.
