Ogun 2027: Adeola vs Adebutu — Zoning Dream Clashes with Indigeneship Storm

As All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Oladipupo Adebutu prepare for a high-stakes showdown in the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, the contest is rapidly evolving beyond traditional zoning debates. Party machinery, personal networks, and a bitter indigeneship dispute are now reshaping the battlefield.

Both men are familiar faces. Adebutu nearly unseated incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2023, losing by just 13,915 votes. Adeola, the serving senator for Ogun West, has emerged as the APC’s consensus candidate, backed by the party structure and the governor.

Yet 2027 looks markedly different. The central questions now revolve around who can assemble a genuine statewide coalition across Ogun’s three senatorial districts — West (Yewa), Central (Egba), and East (Ijebu-Remo) — and its 20 local government areas.

The Indigeneship Flashpoint

The most explosive development centres on Adeola’s ancestry. Adebutu and PDP chieftain Folake Marcus-Bello have accused the senator of not being an indigene of Ogun State, with Adebutu claiming he holds supporting evidence. Adeola’s camp, through media adviser Kayode Odunaro, has dismissed the claims and threatened legal action.

The controversy injects a sharp identity question into an already identity-sensitive race. While Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution does not require a candidate to be an indigene of the state to contest the governorship, Section 318’s definition of belonging to a state — tied to parents or grandparents from an indigenous community — could become relevant if the dispute reaches the courts. For now, it remains a potent political weapon.

Adeola’s Advantages and Challenges

Adeola’s strongest card is the APC platform. The party adopted him as consensus candidate in April and formalised the choice through primaries across all 20 local governments. Governor Abiodun has publicly endorsed him, framing the decision as a long-overdue correction of Ogun West’s historic exclusion from the governorship.

To broaden appeal, Adeola selected Kudirat Adegunwa-Balogun, a chartered accountant from Ogun East, as running mate. The ticket aims to project balance beyond one senatorial district.

Still, the indigeneship row forces Adeola to fight on two fronts: defending his Ogun roots while convincing voters in Central and East that his candidacy serves the entire state.

Adebutu’s Experience and Opposition Hurdles

Adebutu enters the race with proven electoral strength. In 2023 he secured 262,383 votes to Abiodun’s 276,298, winning eight local governments. His running mate, Lateefah Sowunmi-Kolapo, adds further representation to the PDP ticket.

On September 10, the party launched its campaign in Abeokuta with a seven-point agenda covering local government autonomy, education, health, agriculture, security, and youth and women’s empowerment. Supporters from all 20 local governments turned out.

The PDP’s key test is converting Adebutu’s personal network and near-miss performance into a disciplined, statewide structure — while avoiding a repeat of the 2023 vote split that saw ADC’s Biyi Otegbeye take nearly 95,000 votes.

The Deciding Factor

Neither zoning nor ancestry alone will settle the election. Adeola must turn Ogun West’s “our turn” narrative into broader support. Adebutu must prove the PDP can organise effectively at the grassroots and keep the opposition vote united.

Ogun’s political map is complex. Central carries administrative weight around Abeokuta, East draws on deep Ijebu-Remo networks, and West combines historical grievances with growing commercial hubs such as Ado-Odo/Ota. Ultimately, voters are likely to weigh roads, jobs, education, healthcare, security, and the cost of living as heavily as identity or rotation.

The 2023 result showed how razor-thin the margin can be. With Abiodun off the ballot, Adeola carrying the APC flag, Adebutu returning for a second shot, and a new identity controversy in play, the 2027 race is shaping up as a true statewide contest — Adeola versus Adebutu, across every corner of Ogun.
