Tom Hanks Just Embarrassed Trump With An Unprecedented Act Of Defiance

One of the perks of being President of the United States is the private White House screening room, which often showcases new and pre-release blockbusters for the first family at the president’s discretion.
At least it used to be.
Two-time Oscar-winner Tom Hanks is opening a new movie this week — The Post, co-starring bajillion time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep — and he was asked by the Hollywood Reporter if he would agree to host a screening in Donald Trump’s White House.
“I don’t think I would,” Hanks said. “Because I think that at some point — look, I didn’t think things were going to be this way last November. I would not have been able to imagine that we would be living in a country where neo-Nazis are doing torchlight parades in Charlottesville and jokes about Pocahontas are being made in front of the Navajo code talkers. And individually we have to decide when we take to the ramparts.”
“You don’t take to the ramparts necessarily right away, but you do have to start weighing things,” the movie star continued. “You may think: ‘You know what? I think now is the time.’ This is the moment where, in some ways, our personal choices are going to have to reflect our opinions. We have to start voting, actually, before the election. So, I would probably vote not to go.”
Hanks has long been a Democrat and a concerned, thoughtful citizen. But the journey he has taken over the last year, from quiet Democratic supporter to taking to the ramparts and refusing a White House screening, is emblematic of the disgraceful first year of the Trump presidency and Republican control of Washington.
Today, Tom Hanks speaks for all of us. If we start voting now through our actions, by taking to the ramparts, and we show up on Election Day 2018, the next holiday season will give us something to really celebrate: A Democratic Congress.
