A security expert and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Ambassador Abayomi Mumuni, has described President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to Türkiye as a critical opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen counterterrorism efforts and expand military cooperation amid rising security challenges.
Mumuni, in a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, said the visit goes beyond routine diplomacy and presents a timely platform to deepen Nigeria’s long-standing defence and security partnership with Türkiye.

According to him, Türkiye’s growing influence in global defence and security cooperation makes it a strategic partner for Nigeria as the country continues to battle terrorism, banditry and transnational security threats.
While noting that both countries have maintained decades of collaboration in trade, education and diplomacy, Mumuni said Nigeria’s current security realities require greater emphasis on counterterrorism, ammunition supply and structured military partnerships.

He pointed out that Türkiye’s experience in combating terrorism, securing borders and managing complex armed conflicts offers valuable lessons Nigeria can adapt to strengthen its own security architecture.
“Türkiye’s mix of operational successes and challenges provides practical insights that Nigeria can leverage to enhance its national security framework,” he said.
Mumuni called for inclusive and mutually beneficial defence dialogue, stressing that deeper military cooperation and reliable ammunition supply would significantly boost Nigeria’s capacity to tackle both internal and external threats.
He also urged Nigeria to maintain its sovereignty in choosing defence partners, warning against external pressure or restrictive policies that could limit access to critical military assets.
A stronger partnership with Türkiye, he said, could help Nigeria overcome challenges posed by arms embargoes and procurement bottlenecks.
Describing President Tinubu’s visit as a clear signal of Nigeria’s resolve to protect its national interests, Mumuni said enhanced security cooperation with Türkiye would promote national stability, territorial integrity and citizen safety.
He called on Nigerians to support the engagement, expressing optimism that it could pave the way for a more secure and prosperous nation.
