Tinubu Hails Egbetokun’s Police Leadership as Former IGP Retires

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, describing his tenure as one defined by stability, professionalism, and strategic leadership.

In a goodwill message marking Egbetokun’s retirement, Tinubu reflected on a relationship spanning nearly three decades, recounting their first meeting in 1998 when the former police chief was still a young officer. According to the President, Egbetokun stood out early for his discipline, intellectual depth, and strong sense of duty—qualities he said remained consistent throughout his career.

Tinubu also recalled a defining moment in 1999 after his election as governor of Lagos State, when Egbetokun declined consideration for the role of aide-de-camp due to seniority, instead recommending a junior officer. The President noted that Egbetokun subsequently served as chief security officer, demonstrating professionalism, loyalty, and diligence in the role.

The President highlighted Egbetokun’s extensive service record across key police formations, including the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, the Police Mobile Force, the Federal Capital Territory Command, training institutions, Explosive Ordnance Disposal units, and the Kwara State Command. He described the former IGP as a consistent performer known for calmness under pressure and firm decision-making.

Tinubu said Egbetokun’s appointment as Inspector-General of Police in 2023 was the culmination of a career marked by steady growth and competence. He credited his leadership with strengthening the Nigeria Police Force and promoting a more intelligence-driven approach to policing.

While the President focused on Egbetokun’s professionalism and contributions to institutional stability, he did not address controversies or criticisms that arose during his tenure.

As the former police chief bows out of service, Tinubu expressed appreciation for his contributions to national security, wishing him good health and fulfillment in retirement.
