The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Abubakar Gombe, has called on residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to take ownership of the democratic process by electing credible leaders in Saturday’s Area Council elections.
Gombe made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Sarkin Bwari, Awal Musa Ijakoro II, where he sought royal blessings for the party and its candidates ahead of the polls.
The SDP chairman stressed that local governments remain the tier of government closest to the people and most directly responsible for addressing grassroots concerns.

He urged voters to carefully assess candidates based on competence, integrity, and accessibility, noting that those contesting are members of the community who understand local challenges.
“The responsibility of shaping the future of the council lies with the electorate,” he said, assuring residents that the SDP would prioritise people-centered governance focused on economic empowerment, security, and improved service delivery.

Gombe expressed confidence in the party’s Bwari chairmanship candidate, Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as capable of delivering effective leadership aligned with the party’s development agenda.
Also speaking, former SDP presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, underscored the importance of effective local governance in national development.
He argued that strengthening local councils would reduce pressure on the federal structure by ensuring that essential services and development initiatives are efficiently managed at the community level.
Adebayo encouraged residents to vote peacefully and responsibly, cautioning against inducements and stressing that voter turnout and vigilance remain key safeguards against electoral malpractice.
Candidate Promises Inclusive Leadership
In his remarks, Abdullahi pledged to promote inclusive governance and grassroots-driven development if elected.
He emphasised that the Bwari Area Council requires leadership that reflects its diversity and ensures equitable distribution of resources and opportunities, regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliations.
With the FCT Area Council elections drawing near, the SDP leadership says the focus remains on empowering communities and strengthening democratic participation at the grassroots.
