Ogun estate burglary security demand

Residents of the Senior Civil Servants Housing Estate in Ogun State are demanding better security measures to combat rising burglaries that have cost over N120 million in stolen property

Residents of the Senior Civil Servants Housing Estate in Ayerose village, located in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, are growing increasingly concerned about the rising number of burglaries in their neighbourhood.

The estate, which consists of 51 buildings, has suffered a significant loss, with over N120 million worth of property stolen in recent months.

Issa Olude, the state chairman of the association, voiced his concerns after inspecting the homes that had been burgled.

He appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to step in and provide better security measures, especially after many residents have been forced to leave their homes due to the increasing fear of theft.

“The lack of security and the deplorable road conditions have driven many to seek safer accommodations,” Olude said.

He called for the establishment of improved security systems, including the presence of Amotekun corps, and regular patrols both day and night to ensure the safety of the estate’s residents.

Sunday Adeboye, a member of the association and president of the estate, lamented the growing insecurity, stressing that civil servants, who are supposed to live in a safe and secure environment, now live in constant fear of burglary.

Despite previous government interventions, such as the installation of solar streetlights and culverts, the estate continues to experience significant security challenges.

“The electrification in each house has been vandalised, and burglars even target anti-burglary doors,” Adeboye said. “Properties have been stolen, and the poor road conditions make the estate even more vulnerable.”

Ibrahim Fatai, the estate’s secretary, revealed that at least 15 houses have been targeted by burglars in the past few weeks. Recently, a suspected burglar was caught and arrested, along with those who bought the stolen electrical wiring from him.

The residents are urging the government to address these security and infrastructure issues urgently. “The road is bad, and it’s one of the reasons some of our colleagues have left their homes here,” Adeboye noted.

“We need the government’s help to ensure we have peace of mind and a safer living environment for our families.”
