Political sycophancy in Nigeria

In 2004, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo introduced one-time Governor Attahiru Bafarawa to Queen Elizabeth as the best performing governor despite the fact that he was in the opposition. Then, the Queen had stated that there is no democracy without opposition.

Dariye, Fayose, Ladoja and others who were chastised by Obasanjo needed some caution probably just as some All Progressives Congres (APC) governors need some caution now. Following due process is one thing; irregularity in the process is another. If 18 out 50 impeached a governor, it is irregularity of due process.

The publicity team of President Muhammadu Buhari lauded him for non-interference, this is good, but the president seems to condone impunity and executive sycophancy where some governors have governance challenges but use available occasions to worship their political fathers. It is political hypocrisy to look the other way on bad governance and impunity in the states in the name of federalism, but accept executive sycophancy from such executives.

The result has just manifested in the APC crisis in the states producing parallel state executives. It should be noted that good governance in states cloud the performance of the president at the national level in spite of the federal relationship.
