PDP Faction Claims 4.26 Million New Members, Signals Rising Support Nationwide

ABUJA — A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki, has announced the registration of 4,264,675 members in its ongoing nationwide membership drive, describing the figure as a strong indicator of sustained public confidence in the party.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the massive turnout reflects a growing reluctance among Nigerians to align with rival political platforms, particularly the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Ememobong, the registration exercise—conducted over three weeks—was facilitated through a digital platform and supported by a wide network of volunteers across both rural and urban communities, despite tight timelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He noted that data from the portal confirmed that as of midnight on March 31, 2026, over 4.2 million new members had been successfully captured.

“The decision by millions of Nigerians to register is a clear indication that they do not want to become subservient to another party,” Ememobong said, adding that the development underscores the PDP’s responsibility to safeguard the political future of its supporters.

Providing a demographic breakdown, he disclosed that male registrants stood at 2,336,069, slightly higher than the 1,928,606 female members. Youths aged 18–40 accounted for 40.3% of the total, followed by those aged 41–60 at 30.7%, while individuals aged 61 and above made up 28.9%.

Regionally, the South West recorded the highest number of registrations with 953,954 members, followed by the South South (917,652) and North Central (757,502). The North West registered 754,935 members, the North East 646,305, while the South East trailed with 234,327 members.

At the state level, Kaduna led with 408,915 registrants, followed by Edo (378,033) and Oyo (368,204), while Ogun and Kano recorded 316,311 and 275,786 members respectively.

Ememobong argued that the figures demonstrate that while some political office holders may be defecting to the APC, the electorate remains largely aligned with the PDP.

He also took a swipe at the current administration, accusing it of maladministration and slow response to insecurity, claiming many Nigerians are disillusioned with the government.

The PDP faction announced an extension of the registration exercise to April 30, 2026, citing overwhelming demand, and urged Nigerians to take advantage of the free digital registration via its official platform.

Reaffirming the party’s opposition stance, Ememobong dismissed claims of internal collaboration with the APC, insisting the PDP would not become subservient to the ruling party as it prepares for future political contests.
