Speaking after a one-day planning and coordination meeting for Social Behavioral Communication Change (SBCC) implementation with RUWASA, HANDS’ Kano State Lead, Adara Danjuma Priestly, commended the Ministry of Health’s progress but warned that complete eradication requires urgent action.

Kano’s five identified NTDs — schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, trachoma, and STH — have seen significant reductions.
Schistosomiasis cases dropped from all 44 LGAs to 33, while trachoma has been completely eliminated. However, Karaye, Kiru, Kano, Madobi, Rogo, Sumaila, and Kura remain endemic.

Priestly called for stronger WASH interventions to address open defecation, dirty water, poor hygiene, and lack of environmental sanitation.
He stressed that weak coordination between the WASH and NTDs sectors, limited capacity among health workers, and low community awareness remain major hurdles.
Under innovative approaches, HANDS has already conducted over 20,000 trichiasis surgeries, with hydrocele surgeries ongoing.
RUWASA’s Managing Director, represented by Mobilization Manager Ahmad Shamaki, expressed optimism that stakeholder engagement will lead to clear strategies, timelines, and monitoring for sustainable results.
