Ex-Minister Tackles EKEDC Over N29,000 Bill

Former Minister of Communications, Omobola Johnson has lamented receiving a 29,000 electricity bill from Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) for the month of April despite her office being on lockdown.

She took to her twitter page to complain that she had just returned to her office after observing the Covid-19 lockdown for six weeks to meet the bill despite not using electricity at all during the period.

She frowned at the issue of estimated billing which many Nigerians are presently suffering, noting that the trend has to stop.

She tweeted, “Got back to my office on Tuesday after 6 weeks of lockdown to see April bill from @EKEDP for N29k!Not even a light bulb came on in the whole month. Then they had the audacity to disconnect the power because I refused to pay! This estimated billing nonsense really has to stop.”

The former Minister during the administration of former President, Goodluck Jonathan, added that it was the highest bill she had ever received in the last four years.

She said previous bills ranged between N20k and N25k monthly.

In a swift response, EKEDC responded to the minister’s complain, asking her to send her contacts details to enable them treat it accordingly.

“Hello Omobola, We do apologise for the inconvenience. Kindly send us your contact details and snapshots of your current and previous bills as a DM so we can escalate and treat accordingly. Regards,” the company replied.

The response, however, elicited immediate response from Nigerians who bombarded the twitter handle of the distribution company with their own complaints.

Some accused the company of preferential treatment, noting that they have been lodging their complaints before now without any response.
