The Benin City police officer killed was reportedly attached to a Chinese expatriate and was performing a security escort during a routine cash movement.

The incident occurred on 16 July 2025 at around 2:45 pm on First East Circular Road, shortly after the expatriate had made a significant cash withdrawal from a commercial bank on Sapele Road.
The gunmen, believed to be four in number, ambushed the vehicle and opened fire.

“The attackers were ruthless and came prepared. They knew what they wanted,” a source familiar with the incident said.
Reports indicate that the assailants made away with the officer’s AK-47 rifle, 30 rounds of ammunition, and a large sum of money.
Sergeant Yusuf was rushed to a specialist hospital in Benin City but was declared dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited in a mortuary.
The late officer was officially deployed through a police-authorised assignment with a private company. He was escorting the expatriate back from a bank when the ambush occurred.
At the time of reporting, the Edo State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement.
