In a dramatic blow to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, representing Girei State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, formally resigned from the party on Tuesday.
Abdullahi submitted his resignation letter on the floor of the House during plenary, citing the ongoing crisis within the PDP as his reason for leaving. Speaker Bathya Wesley read the letter aloud and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Bernard Hyelamada, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, revealed that Abdullahi’s resignation may be just the beginning.
On Tuesday, the Assembly received one letter from a member representing Girei, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi. More may send their letters on Wednesday during the House plenary,” he told The MetroNews.
The development follows last week’s departure of Senator Binos Yaroe, representing Adamawa South Senatorial District, also from the PDP.
In a letter addressed to his ward chairman in Mayo-Belwa Local Government, Yaroe blamed the “fractured state of the party at the national level” for his decision.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platform that allowed him to win elections in 2019 and 2023, but did not immediately reveal his next political move.
Investigations indicate he is poised to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aligning with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also from Adamawa South, who is expected to contest the presidency on the ADC ticket.
A source close to Yaroe said Atiku has assured him of a Senate return in 2027.
Further signaling potential upheaval, Adamawa State PDP Publicity Secretary Victor Dogo told The MetroNews that all PDP National Assembly members are likely to follow Governor Ahmadu Fintiri if he defects to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or another party.
As defections mount, the PDP faces a critical test in maintaining its influence in Adamawa State politics ahead of upcoming elections.
