Lagos Assures Residents of Continuous Emergency Road Repairs Despite Heavy Rainfall

The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has assured residents that emergency road maintenance will continue across the state despite persistent rainfall affecting road infrastructure and delaying permanent repair works.

The agency said prolonged heavy rainfall has resulted in potholes and waterlogged roads, forcing engineers to implement temporary repair measures to keep major roads safe and accessible until weather conditions improve.

Speaking on the development, the General Manager of the LSPWC, Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, said the corporation remains committed to maintaining road infrastructure throughout the rainy season.

He explained that permanent asphalt overlay and other major pavement works require dry weather to ensure durability and protect public investment.

According to Ajanaku, the agency is currently focusing on emergency interventions, palliative repairs and other engineering solutions to keep roads motorable until permanent repairs can commence.

He noted that while many cities experience flooding and road damage during periods of heavy rainfall, Lagos faces additional challenges because significant parts of the state lie below sea level, making roads more susceptible to flooding and groundwater seepage.

Ajanaku disclosed that the corporation has carried out maintenance projects across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas over the past four weeks.

He listed completed projects to include sectional asphalt overlays on Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue in Eti-Osa, Ikorodu Road near Anthony Bus Stop, and Funsho Williams Avenue in Surulere.

The agency also installed interlocking paving stones on Akilo Road in Agege, sections of Ikorodu Road in Shomolu, and Kodesoh Road in Ikeja. Palliative repairs using boulders were undertaken on Capitol Road by Alfa Nla and Old Abeokuta Road in Agege, Alaba International Road in Ojo, as well as the Addo-Badore and Ogombo roads in Eti-Osa.

Routine road maintenance was also sustained along the Ikorodu Road corridor in Kosofe and Mushin.

The LSPWC boss attributed the corporation’s swift response to the support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, noting that their backing has ensured timely funding and improved coordination among infrastructure agencies.

He also commended the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, for providing technical guidance on road maintenance across the state.

Ajanaku assured residents that engineers are monitoring roads daily and responding to defects wherever weather conditions permit, adding that comprehensive and permanent repairs will begin immediately after the rainy season.

He urged residents to support government efforts by avoiding activities that damage road infrastructure, including dumping refuse in drainage channels, burning tyres on road surfaces, trading on road shoulders, carrying out unauthorised road excavations, spilling petroleum products and vandalising manhole covers.

He further encouraged residents to report damaged roads and other infrastructure emergencies through the corporation’s dedicated emergency hotlines for prompt intervention.
