The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the implementation of the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments approved by President Bola Tinubu, introducing sweeping changes aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s trade, customs administration and economic growth.

The development was announced on Wednesday in a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Abdullahi Maiwada.

According to the NCS, the revised fiscal measures are designed to support local industries, facilitate legitimate trade, improve revenue generation and enhance the administration of customs and fiscal policies across the country.

Among the key amendments are a revised Import Adjustment Tax (IAT) List for the implementation of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (2022–2027), an updated National List under the ECOWAS Common External Tariff, a revised Import Prohibition List, an updated list of goods subject to excise duty, a Green Tax surcharge on motor vehicles with engine capacities of 2,000cc and above, and a revised Export Prohibition List.

The Service said the reforms would provide greater clarity for businesses involved in international trade while encouraging compliance with the country’s fiscal and regulatory framework.

It urged importers, exporters, manufacturers, licensed customs agents, freight forwarders and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the amended tariff schedules and ensure that future transactions comply with the new regulations.

To facilitate implementation, the NCS disclosed that the full 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments have been uploaded to its official website for public access and reference.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s economic agenda through efficient trade facilitation, enhanced revenue collection and strengthened border security.

It added that the success of the new tariff regime would depend on the cooperation and compliance of stakeholders, expressing confidence that the reforms would promote a more competitive, transparent and sustainable economy while boosting Nigeria’s industrial growth and trade competitiveness.
