Afrobeats singer and former P-Square member, Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has sparked reactions on social media after suggesting that Nigeria’s indigenous languages have little value.
The singer, who is currently on vacation in Paris, France, shared on X that watching his children speak French fluently had inspired him to consider buying a home in the French capital.
He wrote, “Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris.”
A fan, however, asked if his children could also speak Igbo.
Responding, Mr P wrote, “And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg.”
The comment drew widespread criticism from social media users, many of whom accused the singer of belittling Nigeria’s indigenous languages. Others noted that Mr P has built part of his music career by incorporating Igbo and other local languages, including Yoruba, into his songs, arguing that he has benefited commercially from their appeal.
