Veteran Nigerian sports journalist Kunle Solaja has cemented his place in football history after covering an unprecedented 10 consecutive FIFA World Cups over a remarkable 36-year career.
From his first assignment at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy to the 2026 tournament, Solaja has remained one of Africa’s most consistent football reporters, documenting some of the biggest moments in world football while adapting to the rapid evolution of journalism.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost sports journalists, Solaja has built a reputation for accurate reporting, in-depth analysis and preserving football history. As the publisher of Sports Village Square, he has played a pivotal role in advancing sports journalism across Nigeria and the African continent.
His World Cup journey began when he became the only Nigerian print journalist officially accredited to cover Italia ’90, a milestone that placed him at the forefront of Nigeria’s sports media on the global stage.
Over the years, his dedication earned international recognition, including honours from FIFA and the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) during the Qatar 2022 World Cup for his enduring contributions to sports journalism.
Throughout his career, Solaja has witnessed the transformation of reporting technology, moving from filing stories through telex machines to fax, email and today’s digital platforms powered by smartphones and instant communication.
Among the defining moments of his career was covering Nigeria’s heartbreaking Round of 16 defeat to Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, when the Super Eagles came within minutes of reaching the quarter-finals before Roberto Baggio inspired a dramatic comeback.
Beyond match reporting, Solaja also distinguished himself through investigative journalism. In 1990, he conducted an investigation into age discrepancies in international football, uncovering irregularities involving players from several countries. The work earned him the Lagos Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Best Reporter Award.
He is currently finalising a memoir chronicling his World Cup experiences. Originally scheduled for publication before the 2026 tournament, the book was delayed to include what he describes as his landmark “La Décima”—his tenth consecutive FIFA World Cup.
Reflecting on his career, Solaja credits businessman Adekunle Soname, former presidential spokesman Femi Adesina, Taiye Ige and his family for their unwavering support throughout his decades-long journey.
He also urged aspiring journalists to prioritise credibility, discipline and continuous self-improvement, stressing that while technology has transformed news gathering, the principles of good journalism remain unchanged.
For Solaja, reaching his tenth World Cup is more than a personal achievement. It is a testament to resilience, consistency and an enduring passion for sports journalism, making him one of Africa’s most accomplished football chroniclers.
