Oyo Governor Vows Not to Yield to Terror as Kidnapped Students and Teachers Held in Oriire

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed the government’s determination not to succumb to terror, even as authorities remain open to dialogue with kidnappers responsible for the abduction of students, pupils, and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

Speaking at a press briefing at his Ikolaba residence in Ibadan, Governor Makinde emphasized that the top priority is the safe and timely return of all victims.

“We will not give in to terror. We will do everything to ensure that our children and their teachers are returned safely,” Makinde declared.

He added that while the government is willing to engage with the abductors to peacefully resolve the situation, the release of the children and teachers must be prompt.

Authorities confirmed that seven students were kidnapped from Community Secondary School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were abducted from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School in Oriire. Tragically, one of the victims has already been killed, according to the governor.

Describing the operation as “fluid and difficult” for security personnel on the ground, Makinde urged responsible reporting to avoid sensationalism, stressing the lives at stake.

An operational centre has been set up at the Oyo State Police Headquarters, where the Commissioner of Police is providing verified updates on the rescue efforts.

On security reinforcements, the governor revealed that two state-procured surveillance aircraft have arrived in Nigeria and are being reassembled at the Nigerian Air Force hangar in Lagos. These aircraft are expected to be operational by the end of June and will help monitor borders with Kwara State and the Republic of Benin.

Governor Makinde reassured residents of the government’s commitment to securing the state and called for public cooperation. “If you see something strange, say something and expect us to do something,” he urged.
