The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the outcome of the just-concluded Area Council elections in Abuja has exposed what he described as “hypocritical” political theatrics by some opposition figures.
Speaking on Sunday after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Wike mocked politicians who “buy corn and groundnuts from roadside sellers” as a campaign strategy to win public sympathy.
According to him, FCT residents have shown they cannot be swayed by symbolic gestures aimed at deceiving voters.

This election has further exposed the hypocrisy of people who go about buying corn and groundnuts from roadside sellers for the purpose of a campaign just to deceive Nigerians, Wike said.
The minister added that the results have clarified the political landscape in the nation’s capital, insisting that Nigerians now understand which party holds genuine grassroots support.

In the polls, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured five of the six Area Councils, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won one.
Wike described critics of the current administration as “emergency democrats” who, he claimed, consistently refuse to acknowledge progress under the government.
The residents of FCT demonstrated that they cannot be deceived by emergency democrats, who have chosen not to see anything good in our country and its government, he stated.
The FCT election results have further intensified political debate in Abuja, with both ruling and opposition figures interpreting the outcome as a referendum on national leadership.
