Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has described the ongoing comparison between singer Wizkid and late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti as “ridiculous,” urging fans to respect the distinct legacies of both artistes.
2Baba shared his views in a snippet from an upcoming episode of the Mic On podcast, where he addressed the controversy sparked by debates on social media.
The discussion gained traction after Wizkid fired back at criticisms from Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, by claiming he is “bigger” than the Afrobeat pioneer.
Reacting to the exchange, 2Baba said comparing the two musicians was not only disrespectful to Fela’s enduring legacy but also unfair to Wizkid’s career.
“Comparing Fela with Wizkid is ridiculous,” he said. “Apart from the fact that it is disrespectful to Fela, at the same time, it is also unfair to Wizkid.”
According to the veteran singer, both artistes emerged in different eras, operated in vastly different environments and made their impact under unique cultural and political circumstances.
He stressed that placing Fela and Wizkid side by side ignores the historical context in which each created their music and diminishes the individuality of their contributions to Nigerian and global music.
2Baba urged fans and critics to move beyond unproductive comparisons and instead celebrate the separate achievements of both musicians.
He said Fela and Wizkid should be judged on their own merit, noting that each has carved out a distinctive legacy that deserves recognition without rivalry.2Baba Slams Fela–Wizkid Comparison as ‘Ridiculous,’ Urges Respect for Both Legends
