Afrobeats singer and activist Seun Kuti has sharply criticised fans of Wizkid, warning them to stop dragging the name of his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, into contemporary music debates.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Seun described the recurring comparisons between modern artistes and Fela as disrespectful and rooted in ignorance. He faulted Wizkid’s fans for attempting to label today’s musicians as the “new Fela,” arguing that such claims reveal a lack of understanding of his father’s revolutionary legacy.

“Keep Fela’s name out of your (Wizkid FC) mouths,” Kuti said, questioning why fans constantly feel the need to invoke Fela in online arguments. He accused them of trying to appropriate Fela’s identity, only to retreat when the comparison no longer suits their narrative.
According to Seun, the issue is not defiance but ignorance, stressing that Fela’s influence transcends music and cannot be reduced to fan rivalries. He further criticised the tendency of fans to fuel unnecessary conflict within the industry rather than simply appreciating music for its artistic value.

Kuti also suggested that constant comparisons reflect dissatisfaction rather than genuine love for music, noting that impactful art should inspire calm, reflection and growth — not social media battles.
Recalling previous clashes with Wizkid’s fanbase, Seun maintained that he would not back down when it comes to defending his father’s legacy. He emphasised that Fela’s name is non-negotiable and deserves respect, highlighting his family’s continued efforts to preserve Afrobeat culture through initiatives such as Felabration.
