Kebbi baby burial case shocks Nigeria as police arrest 20-year-old mother after farmer rescues newborn buried alive in Kamba town
The Kebbi baby burial case has sent shockwaves across Nigeria after police arrested 20-year-old Maryam Atiku for allegedly attempting to bury her newborn daughter alive in the bush.

According to police reports, Atiku wrapped cloth around the baby’s neck and mouth before carrying her to Malam Yaro bush in Dandi Local Government Area. There, she dug a shallow hole and buried the infant alive.
The shocking act came to light when farmer Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad noticed freshly disturbed soil while working near the area.
Suspecting foul play, he raised an alarm, and together with others, dug up the spot — discovering the baby still alive.
The child was rushed to the General Hospital in Kamba, where doctors confirmed she was stable after receiving urgent treatment.
Police spokesman Nafiu Abubakar confirmed that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department arrested Atiku shortly afterward. She has since confessed to the act.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, condemned the incident, pledging “zero tolerance against any form of child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence” in the state.
