The number became vacant following Luka Modrić’s departure to AC Milan as a free agent.

Initial suggestions indicated that Mbappé would retain the No. 9 shirt he chose upon arriving from Paris Saint-Germain.
The number 10 shirt was reportedly being considered for Arda Güler, whose performances at the Club World Cup caught the club’s attention.

However, according to French outlet *L’Équipe*, Real Madrid’s management has now insisted that Mbappé switch to the No. 10. The shirt carries legendary weight at the club and has previously been worn by icons of the game.
Although Mbappé was not overly enthusiastic about giving up his original choice, the decision was made at the top level. It reflects the club’s vision of him as the central figure in their project going forward.
A source close to the club said, “The number isn’t just a shirt; it’s a symbol of leadership and creativity. Kylian represents that future.”
