The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, has sparked serious tension in the area and raised urgent concerns over rising insecurity in the region.

Eyewitnesses told Zagazola Makama that the attack was carried out by six armed men who stormed the market at around 2:20pm.
Riding in pairs on three Bajaj motorcycles, the assailants opened fire immediately upon entering the busy trading area.

Their primary targets appeared to be produce traders who had gathered to buy pepper and other agricultural goods.
A 29-year-old trader, Imoter Denen, from Harga Village, was shot and killed on the spot. He had reportedly just arrived to make purchases when he was gunned down during the assault.
In the chaos that followed, a woman identified as Nguveren Iorwuese was seized and taken away by the attackers. Her current whereabouts remain unknown.
Another trader, Saater Akwaza, was struck by a stray bullet and sustained injuries. He was quickly transported to the General Hospital in Katsina-Ala, where he is now receiving medical treatment. His condition has been described as stable by hospital sources.
Security forces responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from locals. According to a military source, they were in the area during the time of the attack but arrived at the scene only after the gunmen had fled.
The attackers escaped into unknown terrain, and a manhunt is now underway.
The remains of the deceased, Imoter Denen, have been released to his family following their formal request. His death has cast a pall of grief over the community, with many residents expressing anger and fear over what they described as a preventable tragedy.
“This kind of attack is becoming too common. It’s as if these criminals have no fear again. Government must do more,” said a local resident who asked to remain anonymous due to safety concerns.
The attack at Solozo Market is just the latest in a string of violent incidents reported across Benue State in recent months.
Rural communities and local trading centres have become increasingly vulnerable to armed attacks, leaving residents living in constant fear.
While police and military teams have intensified patrols across the region, residents are now demanding a more sustained and visible security presence.
Many believe that unless firm action is taken, such attacks will continue to disrupt daily life and economic activities in the area.
“We want peace. We want protection. People are afraid to go out, to trade, to live normal lives,” said another eyewitness who had narrowly escaped the scene.
Authorities have not issued an official statement on the identity or motive of the attackers. However, speculation among locals suggests the act may be linked to ongoing tensions involving criminal gangs operating in border communities between Benue and neighbouring states.
As investigations continue, the atmosphere in Solozo and surrounding areas remains tense. Shops have remained closed, and market activity has slowed dramatically as traders and residents await further security assurances.
