Senator Gbenga Daniel pledges support for the creation of Ijebu State, emphasising unity among the Ijebu and Remo people during a high-level stakeholder meeting in Ijebu-Ode

Former Ogun State Governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has reiterated his dedication to the unity of the Ijebu and Remo people amid rising momentum for the creation of a new Ijebu State.

Speaking at a press briefing organised by the Implementation Committee on Ijebu State Creation, held at the private residence of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Senator Daniel stated that the quest for state creation is rooted in the people’s constitutional right to self-determination.

“All the areas of Ogun East Senatorial District, which includes the Ijebus and Remos, have the right to self-determination,” Daniel said. “And my job, as their representative, is to facilitate and support their legitimate aspirations.”

He emphasised that there is no conflict in the desire for new states and expressed hope that the region might even be fortunate to secure more than one.

“We might be lucky to get two states but if not, we will always find ways to unite ourselves across all divides for the betterment of the country,” he added.

The senator underlined the significance of maintaining cohesion between the Ijebu and Remo people, suggesting that any administrative changes must be built on a foundation of unity and shared progress.

Present at the high-level meeting were respected figures such as Chief Chris Okunowo (Chairman of the Implementation Committee), Senator Adegbenga Kaka, Prof. Segun Awonusi, Chief Abdulateef Owoyemi, traditional rulers, and local government leaders including Oba Lawrence Adebajo, Oba Abdulrasaq Adenugba, and Dare Alebiosu.

The event highlighted a renewed and coordinated effort by stakeholders to advance the long-standing call for Ijebu State.

While the movement seeks to address regional marginalisation and administrative efficiency, Senator Daniel’s message remained clear: unity must lead the way.
