President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Justice George Oguntade, former Supreme Court Justice and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, as he marks his 85th birthday on Monday, 10th March.

Justice Oguntade, a distinguished jurist, began his legal journey as a court clerk before his appointment as a Judge of the Lagos High Court in 1980.

His rise through the judiciary saw him serve at the Court of Appeal from 1987 to 2004, eventually earning a place at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Throughout his tenure, Justice Oguntade significantly contributed to shaping Nigeria’s legal landscape, particularly in constitutional and administrative law.

His fearless judicial approach earned him recognition, especially for his dissenting judgment in the 2007 presidential election dispute between General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.) of the ANPP and the declared winner, President Umaru Yar’Adua of the PDP.

In his ruling, Justice Oguntade annulled the election and called for a re-run, a stance that reinforced his reputation for judicial independence.

President Tinubu lauded the retired Justice, stating:

> “I celebrate this landmark age as a testament to a life marked with remarkable service in the judiciary and diplomacy. Yours is a life of fearlessness and courage. Lawyers will remember your tenure at the Supreme Court for several landmark judgments that continue to resonate in the nation’s legal system. May your legacy of courage and excellence continue to endure.”

Beyond his judicial achievements, Justice Oguntade also served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2020, where he played a vital role in strengthening bilateral relations between both nations.

His dedication to national service was further recognised when he was conferred with the prestigious national honour of **Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).**

President Tinubu wished Justice Oguntade continued good health and many more years of impactful contributions to society.
