Black Sunday As Fire Razes Anambra Market

What a black Sunday it was for some of the traders at Nkwo daily market Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State following an inferno, which consumed over eight shops, leaving property worth millions of Naira destroyed.

The inferno was said to have started at the morning hours when a tanker conveying diesel lost control in while negotiating a turning within Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi community.

It was gathered that the said tanker was on its way to deliver the said product to yet to be identified filling station from where it developed a fault and was unable to go over a rise.

This made it to continue rolling back until it collided with an packed lorry and exploded with the resulting fire spreading into some of the shops along the roadside of the said community daily marketing.

Although the earlier arrival of the state fire fighting men from Okpoko, Building Material International Market and Government House, Awka fought like wounded lions to stop the fire from escalating into all parts of the market. Al their efforts however proved abortive.

INDEPENDENT gathered from the scene of the ugly incident that two filling stations along the Ogidi-Nkpor road were not touched by the inferno including the office of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which is directly opposite the scene of the incident.

Some of the traders and sympathizers who gathered at the scene thanked God for the quick intervention of the state fire service men, noting that their quick response on the distress calls made across to them saved the entire market from been engulfed by the fire disaster.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogidi Police Station, CSP Mark Ijarafu, there body and soul and was sighted controlling traffic at the scene of the incident, described it as unfortunate, stating that there was no casualty even as he warned tanker owners to always put their trucks in order before putting it on the road.
