A 53-year-old woman has been sentenced to one month in prison after she was caught dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Lagos State.

Nelly Monday was arrested in the Meiran area on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, for allegedly disposing of waste into a drain during rainfall. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) announced her conviction in a statement released on Thursday.

She was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence. The court subsequently convicted and sentenced her to one month imprisonment.

In its statement, LAWMA confirmed: “Nelly Monday, 53, who was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, for dumping in the drains during the rain has been convicted of the offence. She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.”

The authority described indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly into drainage channels and other unauthorised locations, as an environmental offence punishable under the law. It warned residents against the practice and pledged to sustain enforcement across the state.

“The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos,” LAWMA stated.

The conviction forms part of intensified efforts by the Lagos State Government and environmental agencies to curb practices that obstruct drainage systems and contribute to flooding. Residents have been urged to dispose of waste responsibly through approved channels only.
