Prominent Nigerian political figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and his successor Professor Yemi Osinbajo, gathered in Ubima, Rivers State, on Saturday to pay their final respects to Dame Mary Orduah Amaechi, the mother of former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
The funeral service held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church drew a high-powered delegation of African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders. Atiku, the party’s presidential candidate, attended alongside his wife, Titi Abubakar. He was joined by ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and other senior party officials.
Former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami was also among the dignitaries present. The political leaders stood with Amaechi, his wife Dame Judith Amaechi, and members of the family as they bid farewell to the matriarch.
Dame Mary Orduah Amaechi passed away on July 16, 2026, at the age of 89.
In a statement, the ADC explained that its leaders travelled to Rivers State to support Amaechi, the party’s vice-presidential candidate, during his period of mourning. The party said the delegation was present “to pay their final respects and stand with the Amaechi family in their time of grief.”
Saturday’s burial came after a series of condolence visits by notable politicians. A day earlier, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso visited Amaechi at his Port Harcourt residence to sympathise with the family.
Amaechi served as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 before becoming Minister of Transportation. He is currently the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
