APC elects new chairman on July 24 as Ali Bukar Dalori leads preparations following Ganduje’s resignation; NEC notice sent to INEC, says Fuanter

Ali Bukar Dalori, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), has assumed the role of acting national chairman and confirmed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will be held on that date to elect a new substantive leader.

Dalori, who now leads the National Working Committee (NWC), made this announcement after a high-level meeting convened at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national secretariat in Abuja on Monday.
Also speaking to journalists, the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Barrister Festus Fuanter, stated that the official notification of the NEC meeting has been transmitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in accordance with electoral law.

“The NEC meeting has been scheduled for July 24, and we have already notified INEC as required,” Fuanter confirmed.
This crucial development comes days after Ganduje’s abrupt resignation, which many insiders attribute to mounting pressure within the party’s ranks and a broader strategic shakeup led by loyalists of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Although the APC has not yet announced potential candidates for the position, there is growing speculation that the ruling party’s new leader may be selected to reflect the internal balance of power ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dalori, now steering the party’s leadership machinery in an acting capacity, has expressed strong commitment to uniting the party and aligning fully with President Tinubu’s administration.
“My job now is to stabilise the party and ensure we remain strong under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. I urge all party members to remain focused and united,” he said.
The APC is navigating a delicate moment, with several defections reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape. In recent days, prominent politicians across the country have abandoned their former parties to join the APC, including Lagos PDP leaders and Senator Neda Imasuen of Edo State, who hinted at dumping the Labour Party.
Meanwhile, the party is still recovering from the tragic loss of its Ondo State chairman, Adewale Olatunbosun, who was abducted and killed by kidnappers. That case has added to the emotional strain within the party’s leadership in the South West.
Observers say the NEC meeting in July will be a key turning point, setting the tone for the APC’s internal cohesion and strategic planning ahead of key off-cycle elections and the 2027 presidential contest.
Political analyst Musa Ibrahim noted, “The party must get its next chairman right. Ganduje’s exit presents a chance to reset, especially if they want to strengthen support across regions.”
As it stands, Ali Bukar Dalori, a seasoned politician from Borno State and close ally of the president, has received wide backing for his calm approach and firm commitment to party stability.
He has already begun meeting with zonal leaders to ensure broad consensus ahead of the NEC session.
With less than a month to go before the election of the new chairman, the APC appears determined to avoid any internal rancour that could jeopardise its momentum at the national level.
